Outdoor Adventuring

Tallahassee boasts a spectacular outdoor environment, filled with thrills and excitement. Over 600 miles of trails wind their way through and around Tallahassee, drawing in thousands who enjoy exploring the great outdoors on foot, bike, boat or horseback to Florida’s capital city. And the sights along these trails are all unique and breathtaking as are the species of wildlife that call the city home, so be sure to grab your camera. On black water rivers, peaceful manatees slowly bob along while colorful, and sometimes rare, birds fly overhead. Atop rugged mountain bike trails, towering live oaks stand guard over the squirrels, deer and foxes that live in their shadows. And along multi-use trails where hikers, cyclists and riders on horseback share the way, wide-open terrain winds its way around sinkholes, springs and breathtaking forest prairies blooming with wildflowers.

Fall, winter and early spring are the best times to hike, and Tallahassee boasts numerous trails in the Big Bend region that are highly scenic and sometimes challenging. Torreya State Park is one of these spots; known for its deep ravines and steep bluffs, the park’s 15 miles of hiking trails are Florida’s version of the Appalachian Trail. And the 3.3 mile Garden of Eden Trail just south of the park near Bristol offers more of the same along with spectacular views of the Apalachicola River valley from atop Alum Bluff.
