Popular Attractions

The City of New Braunfels is one of Texas’ top tourist destinations and home to one of the best water parks in the country, Schlitterbahn, offering 65 acres of family fun along the banks of the Comal River. State-of-the-art water roller coasters, inland surfing, giant hot tubs and sky coaster are all wrapped up in one park. You can even bring your own picnic and in true small town style, parking is free! Keeping with the theme of one of a kind water recreation, the Texas Ski Ranch presents wake boarding without a boat on Texas’ only cabled lake system. Excellent varieties of recreation are afforded by the waterways in and around New Braunfels and are popular for tubing, swimming, rafting, canoeing, kayaking and fly fishing. Not one, but two lovely rivers wind through this delightful city. Canyon Lake rounds out the complement of water recreations with sailing, boating, water skiing and fishing. Additionally, New Braunfels offers up unique ways to return to nature. The Natural Bridge Caverns is popular not just for out-of-towners, but thousands of native Texans head there each year to soak in the breathtaking beauty of the caverns' geological features, while learning about geography and some of the area's other physical formations and history. There's also the Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch for safari-like tours among local and exotic animals and birds. Take a Two-Step back in time to Gruene Texas, a historic district within New Braunfels known for its authentic southern feel, excellent country dancing and world-class barbecue. Once its own town, Gruene boasts an independent feel, cozy landscape and easy-going atmosphere for a quiet day trip. Many generations of families and college students return every summer to tube for miles down the Guadalupe and Comal rivers, and a plethora of skateboard enthusiasts head that way each year to enjoy the Ernest Eikel Skate Park.

The vibrant downtown area is a hotspot for fun for both locals and visitors with plenty of excellent entertainment options. The Brauntex Performing Arts Theater, Clay Casa, Historic Outdoor Art Museum, New Braunfels Brewing Company and the New Braunfels Railroad Museum are all popular attractions. There's also great activities like the Spass Walking Tour of the city, New Braunfels Ghost Tour and the Circle Arts Theater. The town also holds "Wurstfest", a German-style sausage festival, every November, drawing on the city's strong German heritage. Plus, each December, the town celebrates Wassailfest in the historic downtown. It's an evening of music, fun food, great shopping, thousands of twinkling holiday lights and, of course - lots of free wassail (hot cider) for you to sample!

 There's a ton of other annual events visitors can take advantage of, such as the New Braunfels Antique Market, Old Gruene Market Days, the South Texas Fishing Expose', Guadalupe River Troutfest and the Crawfish Festival of New Braunfels. There's also Folkfest, Americana Music Jam, the Juko-Kai International Martial Arts Exhibition, Bike MS: Alamo Ride to the River, Gruene Music & Wine Festival and the Dia De Los Muertos Festival. Outdoor Spaces

New Braunfels parks are a sportsman's paradise, nestled in the bosom of the scenic Texas Hill Country. Whether you enjoy hunting, fishing, hiking, horseback riding, running, biking, boating or camping or more, there's plenty of room for outdoor fun in New Braunfels. Fischer Park, the largest park in the New Braunfels park system, offers a variety of facilities perfect for discovery and exploration. You can stroll or run around the park on over two miles of greenway trails, where fresh air, sunshine and nature are abundant. Relax at the two fishing ponds, splash at the sprayground, enjoy the playgrounds or take in the dramatic views of New Braunfels from the 62 acre hill top park. Landa Park, another iconic staple for New Braunfels, has recently completed a $5,000,000 renovation and offers picnic facilities under the shade of giant, ancient oak trees. Walk or jog on the parks special trails, or ride a miniature train that chugs around the 51 acre park. An excursion on a paddle boat is one of the best ways to see the Comal Springs and Landa Lake, plus, there's opportunities for miniature golf, or for you to enjoy the flora and fauna on the Panther Canyon Nature Trail.

New Braunfels is home to a number of excellent, country campgrounds, and among them, the Hill Country RV Resort is the most popular. The park is located in a secluded, countryside area, filled with fresh greenery, crisp, clean air and wide open skies perfect for stargazing and sunset viewing. The park is also close to attractions such as a playscape for kids, indoor heated pool, indoor hot tubs, live music on summer weekends, planned activities year round and a spider web for the kids. There's also a jumping pillow, game room with coin operated games, sand volleyball and golf carts. The lucky RVers who snap a reservation here can look forward to amenities such as fully-outfitted cabin rentals, WIFI, cable TV, laundry facilities, restrooms, showers, fire pits,big rig sites and an exercise area. New Braunfels is home to excellent local Texas eats, influenced by traditional southern and Mexican flavors. Popular spots include: Gristmill River Restaurant & Bar, Clear Springs Restaurant, Myron's and Gruene River Grill. There's also the Alpine Haus Restaurant, McAdoo's Seafood Company, El Nopalito and Fork & Spoon. Plus, there's a number of craft breweries and wineries near the city for travelers passing through to take advantage of.

New Braunfels is no stranger to preserving history, evident in the presence of a number of great local museums and landmarks.

Sophienburg Archives & Museum of History

You can take the journey with Prince Carl and his group of German colonists as they cross the ocean and make their way into central Texas. Admire their courage and determination to establish a new colony at the edge of Indian Territory. Exhibits, rich in local artifacts, photographic images, maps and documents, take visitors through the history and cultural heritage of New Braunfels and Comal County. The Sophienburg Museum offers public lectures, school programs and community events that promote the area’s unique history.

 

New Braunfels Conservation Society

The Conservation Society was founded in 1964 to save the Lindheimer house – one of New Braunfels’ historic homes. As the IH-35 corridor developed through the community, the Conservation Society raised funds to save and move notable structures onto our 3.5-acre village. Over the years, its mission has grown to preserve and promote the history and heritage of New Braunfels, a mission that continues today.

 

New Braunfels Railroad Museum

The New Braunfels Historic Railroad and Modelers Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of railroad artifacts and education. Our members have a diverse cross section of interests including railroad history, artifact collection and model railroading in all scales.
