About Brownsville

When you’re heading to Brownsville, Texas, be sure you’re carrying your passport in case you want to cross the border into Matamoros, Mexico (always check State Department travel advisories online before leaving the country). Brownsville is located on the northern side of the Rio Grande, at the southernmost tip of Texas. It’s also a city with a rich, historical past. Several battles were staged here during the American Civil War, the Texas Revolution, and the Mexican-American War. It’s a great location for road-trippers to get a break from driving, with a handful of Brownsville RV parks in the vicinity.

South Padre Island, a point of interest here in Brownsville, is a barrier island located on the Gulf of Mexico. This is a popular resort destination, especially for tens of thousands of college students during Spring Break. There are a few South Padre Island campgrounds with stunning coastal views. But be sure to make your reservations early because spaces at RV parks near Brownsville go fast.

San Antonio, about 300 miles north of Brownsville, is mostly known for being home of the Alamo and San Antonio Missions National Historic Park, which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Because it’s so close to Austin, New Braunfels, San Marcos, and other popular Central Texas cities, there are plenty of RV parks in the San Antonio vicinity.

If you’re interested in camping near Houston, fill up the gas tank ‘cause the home of the Astros, Rockets, and NASA’s Johnson Space Center is more than five hours north of Brownsville and nearly three hours east of San Antonio. The good news is that there are plenty of campgrounds around Houston to accommodate all the RVers traveling around the largest city in the Southwest. If you’re interested in campsites near Houston – not in Houston proper – there’s good news and bad news. The good news is that, yes, there’s plenty of camping in the surrounding towns. The bad news is that Houston is so sprawling, you will need even more gas to get to those adjacent communities.

Amarillo, which is actually nowhere near Brownsville, Houston, or San Antonio, is a great place for camping if you don’t mind long drives. And since you’re an RVer, we know you can tolerate a nearly nine-hour trek from Houston to Amarillo. Amarillo is the largest city in the Texas Panhandle. Fun fact: It was once the helium capital of the world. In 2016, Wired magazine revealed there’s a global helium shortage. Fortunately, they have a backup sobriquet: “The Yellow Rose of Texas.” So whether you’re going for the canyon views, prehistoric flint quarries, or to catch a glimpse of Texas’ bison herd, there’s a campground or RV park near San Antonio for your family to call home.
