About Hagerstown

Hagerstown RV parks and campgrounds are spread around the outskirts of the metro area and cluster around nearby towns like Williamsport, Marlowe, and Thurmont. If you’re craving culture, check out the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts, whose architecture and grounds are admired by culture critics all over. The Hagerstown Roundhouse Museum and its model trains offer a fun and in-depth historical perspective on the importance of the railroad in this part of the country, and how it helped shape growth and progress in northern Maryland.

Oftentimes called McAfee Falls, the longest of the cascading waterfalls in Maryland is officially called Cunningham Falls, which is located in a state park of the same name. About a 30-minute drive east of Hagerstown is Thurmont, the town that banks the other side of Camp David, where U.S. Presidents, since Franklin D. Roosevelt, has gone to broker peace and economic treatise or just get away from the hustle and bustle of the Beltway. During the Obama administration, Camp David was open one weekend per month to civilian visitors. Other heads of state are not so generous with the tax-funded getaway.

The Catoctin Mountains also feature an historic iron furnace which is a popular point of interest for history buffs and the Catoctin Mountain Park itself, to the north, has miles of hiking trails that can also be used for cross country skiing in the winter. If it’s relevant to your interests, then you probably already know that some of the best fly fishing in Maryland can be had in these hills, if you know who to ask where they’re biting and what they’re biting on.

Closer to Hagerstown is South Mountain State Park, near Boonsboro, where the Appalachian Trail runs through on its way to Georgia and Maine. Many brave souls trek here each year to complete the long journey on foot. The park has hiking trails, and lots of scenic vistas within its 40-mile-long stretch. South Mountain State Battlefield is here, and come summertime, Greenbriar Lake is one of the more popular Maryland swimming sites.
