Most Iowa City RV parks and campgrounds are clustered around Lake Macbride State Park and along the Iowa River. There are several in the Amana area, and plenty as you travel north towards Cedar Rapids. While this part of the state might not generate as much buzz as parts of Upper Iowa — like Clear Lake, north of Des Moines — there’s still a lot to do here. To the west of Iowa City is the town of Oxford and nearby Kent Park, which where to go to see wetlands, forests, and prairie land, with miles of hike and bike trails, fishing, and camping spots. Oxford is the Hawkeye Wildlife Management Area, which is much larger and less developed, for those who are looking for a truly wild Iowa experience. Lake McBride is dotted with parks and preserved areas for recreation and adventure, including Sugar Bottom Recreational Area and Lake View OHV Park.


If you’re looking for a good time in Iowa City, head over to the University of Iowa, which plays a pivotal role in the area’s youthful and academic culture. The Iowa Old Capitol Building, where the seat of government once stood, now provides the focal point for the University. The UI is also home to the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library, a museum of art, and museum of natural history. Sports fans enjoy the many athletic venues around the University of Iowa campus, where the mighty Hawkeyes compete alongside the other members of the Big 12 Conference.
