About San Diego

With a population nearing 1.5 million, San Diego, California is the second largest city in the state, behind Los Angeles. Like LA, San Diego's coastline maintains temperatures close to 70 °F all year, making the city perfect for camping. Geographically, it’s a hilly city: the Laguna Mountains lie 15 miles to its east and are surrounded by the Cleveland National Forest.

San Diego is a city made for the outdoor enthusiast. Its diverse landscape accommodates a plethora of camping activities, and as such, most RV parks are located in the mountains, on beaches, near the San Diego River, in ecological reserves and near lagoons. For campers wishing to stay near the beach, this affords them the opportunity to ocean fish, snorkel, surf, sail, kayak, and do basically any beach-related camping activity you can imagine.

An excellent site for such activities is the San Elijo State Beach. It offers over 150 sites, 26 of which are RV only. This well-kept beach is located near a coral reef, and is great for snorkeling. Silver strand is another state beach that’s a great option. This 7-mile isthmus has a beach facing the ocean on one side and a beach facing the San Diego Bay on the other, offering a fantastic view of the city.

Inland from the ocean, San Diego has a variety of low-cost private RV parks. In the mountains of El Cajon, a city 20 miles east of boundaries of San Diego, the Circle RV Resort offers a getaway from city life. All of its 165 gravel RV sites have full-hookups, and guests staying there have free access to its large fitness center, library, and club room.

Once back in San Diego proper, the San Diego Zoo is an absolute must-see! With over 3,700 animals, it's one of the largest zoos in the world. Towards the edge of San Diego city limits, Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve is 2,000 acres of coastal land just waiting to be hiked. Afterwards, hit the Torrey Pines Golf Course for a round or two.
