Picture Butte is a town in Alberta, Canada. The town has 22 residential areas and a population of 1,738 people. It is located on Highway 12 west of Lethbridge and east of the British Columbia border.

 

Picture Butte was named after an elk drinking pool that had been formed when water was cut off from the river by beavers damming the stream near its mouth. The butte (hill) later received its name from this original small hill that stood beside it. The elk hide remained on the hill when the town was founded

 

Picture Butte was in the Lethbridge Development District until 1998, when it was amalgamated into Lethbridge County. The area is part of the Lethbridge CMA (Sporting Region 7 for many areas of western Alberta) and is represented by Councilors Anna Haworth of the Lethbridge City Council. The Town has a population density of 64 people per square mile (15/km²), making it the least populous municipality in Alberta.

1. The Butte River Regional Park is a quite large area and is located on the south side of Highway 12 close to Canmore. 2. The Bow River Regional Park is located on the south side of Highway 12 close to Bow Island, Alberta. It features a small lake for boating and fishing, as well as both RV and tent camping sites and trails for mountain biking.

 

3. The 5-mile Regional Park is located on 5 miles road south of Picture Butte. It features long trails for hiking, biking and horseback riding, as well as both RV and tent campsites.
