About Onoway

Onoway is a town on the banks of the Sturgeon River in northeastern Alberta, Canada. The town's population sits at around 1,300 and its economy relies heavily on forestry activities and tourism. The area is a popular destination for hunters and duck hunters alike.

Onoway was settled by Ukrainian farmers in 1894, who established a small farming community with Ukrainian culture, language, churches, and customs that thrive to this day. The area became a booming logging town in the 1930s. Once the sawmill closed, most of the residents moved on to other communities and settlements such as Winnipeg and Calgary.

Today, many of Onoway's buildings serve as community centers. The OHS (Onoway Hospital) was built in 1963. The town has two schools, a high school, and a junior high school; both are operated by the OHS. There are four community centers where many local events take place and a public library that opened in 1989.
