The Elks Lodge paints a picture of charity, community, and kinship, but the reality is far from it. Instead of a welcoming hand during a time of great need, the experience that unfolded was anything but charitable. It’s disheartening to see a group with such noble principles fall short in their execution. I approached the Elks Lodge during one of the most trying times in my life, drawn in by their mission statements highlighting charity and brotherly kindness. I miss the days of being an Eagle Scout with bountiful opportunities to serve my fellow men and wanted to find that again. I initially didn’t know their RV parking was for members only. Instead of politely informing me of this policy, Sabrina the “Exalted Ruler” verbally attacked me and threatened to have me towed. I reached out via email and phone call to see if an agreement could be made. I’ve fallen on hard times and just need somewhere to charge up occasionally. This will allow me to have my phone working and apply to jobs so I can get back on my feet again. Isn’t this what a charity is about - helping people get back on their feet? I wasn’t asking to set up camp in their parking lot. All I needed was an hour or two each week. I didn’t want to be an antler in their side or inconvenience their activities, so I promised to only come by when no one was using the area. I even volunteered to help with charity activities, to DJ events, help with their website, or anything else in order to make up for the inconvenience. Ironically for an organization named after such a majestic creature, their leadership didn't display any grace. Instead of a peaceful, civilized discussion, the Exalted Ruler again came at me with all the rage of an angry elk, threatening police involvement and financial destruction. One would hope the Elks Lodge would display a bit more 'herd mentality', looking out for those in their community, not just those willing to throw money at them. This experience made it clear the values they claim to embrace don’t go further than their promotional material. In closing, for those considering supporting or interacting with the Elks Lodge, you might want to ponder if their actions truly match the principles they so proudly advertise. True charity isn't selective. It isn't aggressive. It is universal and, most importantly, kind.
