Arkalon park is located 10 miles NE of Liberal KS on HWY 54. The park offers concrete pads, water, 30/50 amp power for campers, and well maintained grassy areas for tents. Most sites have covered picnic tables. All sites have fire rings and BBQ grills. There are hiking trails, a sandy volleyball area, fishing ponds on the property, and an amazing playground for kids. There is also plenty of room to set up outdoor games. A fully equipped bath house is available for your convenience. For your safety, there are several tornado shelters (which hopefully, we never have to use).

Long Term Stays

Please contact the campground directly regarding the possibility for long term accommodations (contract workers, etc.).

Camp Host Hours

Camp host office hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Disorderly Conduct

Disorderly conduct will not be tolerated. Upon first offense, violators will be expelled permanently from the facility.

Firearms

The discharging of firearms is prohibited.

Hunting Prohibited

No hunting.

Vehicles

Vehicles on graded roads only.

Speed Limit

Speed limit is 30 mph in park, unless otherwise posted. Speed limit is 5 mph in campground.

Fireworks

Fireworks are strictly prohibited.

Pet Rules

Pets must be on a leash at all times.

Fire Rules

Fires in grills and designated areas only.

Swimming Prohibited

No swimming.

No Littering

$500 to $1,000 fine for littering.

Wildlife

Cattle and wildlife have the right-of-way.

Trees

Cutting of standing trees is prohibited.

Consumption of cereal malt beverages is permitted in campground and fishing areas.

Area Tips

Arkalon park is named after the town of Arkalon that was founded in 1888 at the Cimarron river crossing of the Chicago, Kansas and Nebraska railway, a part of the Rock Island. Town lots were cheap, and people flocked in by the hundreds. However, the deep sand of the area was a serious handicap to the movement of horse-drawn freight, and the town never succeeded in establishing itself as a profitable marketing point. It was sustained for years by the large stockyards but by the 1920's most of the population had gone.

There is a wonderful view of the Mighty Sampson of the Cimarron Railroad Bridge that is still in use today. The bridge was a new design, built in 1939, out of necessity after three different bridges at this location colapsed during a span of two decades. The bridge is 113 feet above the river bed (which is now dry), 1269 feet long, and is a floating bridge. It sits on pylons but is not actually attached to them. It was a contender for the 8 wonders of Kansas Architecture award.

The site offers quite a bit of hiking through reclaimed natural areas, though a great many invasive plants remain. Good wildlife habitat. The sand burrs were something of a problem.

Beautiful park! Camp hosts were helpful and nice! Our site was a big pull thru for our 44 foot fifth wheel. We enjoyed Dorothy’s house and Braum’s ice cream in Liberal.

Pretty good stay...there are sandpickers and alot of dead grass around site....so some disadvantages but overall not too bad. No wi-fi or cell service. (Verizon) Road in a bit washboard gravel but not too far, bathrooms so so.. playground really nice, lots of trails. Be a great place for many but we'd probably not stay again

Sweet little spot nestled in the trees of Liberal, KS. The space felt secure, and the property was very well cared for. As a solo traveler, this was an easy stopover space that felt safe and secure overnight. There also is a bird sanctuary on site, along with a few hiking trails. And for the cost, it's a tremendously valuable little gem.

Very nice park with large open areas for the kids to play and a playground. Very sensible rate at $15 with water and electric. Dump station at the entrance to the campground and tornado shelter pods for emergencies. Great place for an overnight stop on our return trip from the West Coast.

I absolutely LOVE Arkalon Park. One of our favorite places to just go relax. It is beautiful down there. Lots of trees, free firewood, lots of walking trails, a beautiful playground for the kids, a clean bathhouse, and even storm shelters. Fishing ponds just up the road for the angler in your family too!! We cannot say enough good things about this place. If you haven't been, you are missing out!!

A lovely place to stay. It was very quiet, well maintained grounds with level pads. The camp host and various worker were very nice. Ample play equipment if you have small children. Bathrooms were clean but a bit rustic. They attract wild bird with feed and we saw deer as well. Fire wood provided with a fire ring. Great overnight stay while traveling to the Grand Canyon. Would stay again!

I’m hesitant to leave a review because I selfishly don’t want this gem to become popular. We were here in May 2024. This is our second visit. We actually drove 9 1/2 hours just so we could stay an extra day on our trip east. We’re birders and we’ were not disappointed. Our site even had a built and maintained bird bath as we also watched two Mississii Kites build a nest. Ponds and roads and wonderful walking trails gave us 44 more species. Our site had a level cement pad and all sites are far apart. If Camping scares you because of possible tornados, don’t fret as they have several tornado shelters. We will return if ever headed that direction again. Our fifth wheel is 28’. Only negative was very dirty showers and I think they have a host but never saw evidence that they were around.

Don't really know what happened on the days you were here, but I truly apologize if they were not clean. We do have Camp host onsite and there is most always someone in the office from 8:00 am. to 6:00pm. Generally, if no one is in the office, we are out on the grounds somewhere. We are glad you enjoyed your stay here and excited that your bird watching was very successful in our park. I loved everything about the park. The hosts were very friendly. The view of the Sampson of the Cimarron Trestle was outstanding. I enjoyed hiking the trails. We camped on site A4 which had a concrete pad. $15 for electric & water is a super bargain. I will definitely return if I’m ever in the area again.

My wife and I stayed at Arkalon Park for the third time a few weeks ago (in early May, 2024). We love this park. The spots are level, paved, and well spaced. The campground host is very friendly. We get a very secluded feeling when staying there. There are no showers, but the bathroom is well maintained. We'll be back for a fourth visit.

Very nice and spacious park. $15 a night camping for W/E can't be beat. Restroom with showers. Free firewood. Only downside is the 2 miles rough ride in.

we definitely had a little bit of a hard time finding it the night we got there because we went late at night, but the host Lucas actually drove out to find us and guide us to our campsite, which was absolutely amazing for us. Him and Barb were the friendliest nicest hosts we have ever had for anything. it was a wonderful stay it was super quiet, super cozy and everything worked amazing the bathrooms were very, very clean and it was just a very comfortable stay we will definitely definitely be back
